Ontario, Wisconsin
Paddling the Kickapoo River in a canoe or kayak is a treat for area visitors, and with the most livery services, Ontario proudly bills itself as the “Canoe Capital of the Kickapoo.” The limestone bluffs provide incredible scenery and a glimpse at an ancient river system. River trips can be as short as a couple of hours or you can enjoy a week-long adventure, if you choose to paddle to river’s end as it joins the Wisconsin River.
The village is nine miles south of the popular Elroy-Sparta Bike Trail, part of the Rails-to-Trails project and featuring three unique tunnels on its 32-mile length. Just east of the village is the beautiful Wildcat Mountain State Park, and the Kickapoo Valley Reserve lies to its south. Both offer miles of hiking and nature viewing.
