Miles of stunning river scenery along the Great River Road eventually brings you to Lynxville, the site of Lock & Dam #9. Here you can watch the fascinating process of “locking through,” as a seasoned tugboat pilot guides a 600-foot, 9000-ton barge through a lock with little room to spare. The river town features two boat launches within the Village, and two more within two miles, all accessing the Upper Mississippi River Wildlife Refuge. The Refuge offers some of the best wildlife viewing and scenic overlooks in the Midwest.
Lynxville offers you a point of entry to Pool 9 of the Upper Mississippi River, where the American Bald Eagle population is one of the largest nesting populations in the Midwest. Volunteers of the Friends of Pool 9 Organization have continuously monitored nesting activity for several years, under the guidance of the McGregor District of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. There are now 140 confirmed nests in the 31 mile long stretch of Pool 9, between Genoa and Lynxville.
There has also been confirmation of a pair of nesting Trumpeter Swans, with three signets. Pool 9 is a significant resting stop for thousands of both Trumpeter and Tundra swans each year, as they make their annual journey to their seasonal habitats in Chesapeake Bay. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Capoli Slough restoration and enhancement project is well underway in the lower half of Pool 9. When completed, the island restoration will offer new fish and waterfowl habitat area.
