It’s hard to remember how much more slowly time once moved, allowing us to not just experience but savor those special times and seasons, such as Christmas, with friends and family. Now you can relive a little bit of those slower times at the 30th Annual Norskedalen Old-Fashioned Christmas in the Driftless, Wisconsin region.
Tour the quaintly decorated grounds of the 1860’s Bekkum Homestead in a horse-drawn wagon to the sound of area musicians sharing Christmas carols and other traditional, seasonal music. Tour the buildings of the homestead to see how Christmas was celebrated around the turn of the 20th century.
Norskedalen Old-Fashioned Christmas demonstrations will include spinning and the art of cooking on a wood stove. You’ll find freshly baked, home-made goods like lefse and doughnuts at the bake sale as well as everything from Norwegian meatballs to rommegrot (cream pudding) at the a-la-carte buffet.
Be sure to take advantage of the unique, Norskedalen gifts at the gift shop and make and take home your own, handmade Christmas decorations for a year you’ll never forget! For the kids there will be crafts in the Engum House, a scavenger hunt with prizes, and of course, Santa Claus will drop by in an old fashioned sleigh between noon and 2.
Norskedalen, Norwegian for “Norwegian valley,” is a nature and heritage center located in Driftless Wisconsin. Norskedalen Nature & Heritage Center includes the Bekkum Homestead Open Air Museum: a group of 13, original, Norwegian pioneer homestead farm buildings including a smithy, summer kitchen, spring house, granary, barn, outhouse, and a rare log corncrib.
