Since it was established in 1846, Retreat has never lost that old-fashioned sense of community. A quaint little village on a windswept ridge nine miles east of the Mississippi, Retreat is the home of the original Retreat World’s Fair, held every year since 1919, complete with horse show, parade, and 4-H projects.
The 10-acre Walnut Mound Cemetery is the location of the Veterans Memorial Monument honoring the veterans buried there who served in wars from the War of 1812 to the present. Businesses may be gone, but the farmland that drew settlers still remains.
