Cashton

Cashton, Wisconsin

The Village of Cashton is nestled in the Ocooch Mountains, better known as the driftless area. The land is characterized by beautiful timber covered hills, lush green valleys, numerous streams, limestone cliffs and scenic farmland. During spring and summer, wild flowers carpet meadows and woodlands and in the fall changing leaves cover the hills with vibrant colors.

Originally the settlement location was about a mile southwest of the current community site. It was known then as Hazen’s Corners having been named for an earlier pioneer that operated an inn on the historic Black River Stage Road.

Eventually a railroad connecting Sparta through the rich farmlands south to Viroqua was completed. William Henry Harrison Cash was instrumental in bringing the rail line through Cashton. Due to his persistence and influence, the community now bears his name and was incorporated in 1879.

The land was once inhabited by the Ho-Chunk Nation. The first settlers in the area included Americans moving west but also large numbers of immigrants from Germany, Norway, Bohemia and Ireland. The 1850’s pioneers proved to be exceptional farmers and that tradition continues to this day.

In 1966, the first Amish families came to rural Cashton. They were attracted to the excellent farmland as well as the relatively low land price. The Amish settlement has grown to over 300 families comprising more than 2,000 individuals and is one of the largest Amish settlements in America. The simple life of the Amish has long intrigued the English, as non-Amish are called, as have their old world skills that result in colorful quilts, handcrafted furniture, tasty baked goods and tempting candies. The Amish hold large auctions on Memorial Day and Labor Day with beautiful quilts and hand crafted furniture being major attractions. Weekly produce auctions are held throughout spring, summer and fall.

Located at the junction of State Highway 33 and 27, Cashton offers unique specialty shops, casual and fine dining, bakeries, cheese factories as well as a variety of lodging ranging from beautiful bed and breakfasts, to cabins and nearby motels. Visitors can experience the Amish lifestyle with the assistance of experienced tour guides.

Cashton has an excellent school system with a tradition of success in both academics and extra curricular activities. The village has a public library, historic churches, an exceptional community health center and a beautiful park.

The village recognizes its rich heritage by hosting an annual fall festival the second weekend in September. The festivities include a Miss Cashton pageant, athletic events, a tractor pull, antique car show, carnival, farm toy show, food, beverages and topped off by a huge parade on Sunday. Cashton celebrates Independence Day with games, food, beverages and fireworks

Cashton is in close proximity to the Mississippi River, Kickapoo River, Kickapoo Valley Reserve, Norskedalen, Wildcat State Park, Elroy/Sparta Bike Trail and the largest Amish community in Wisconsin. If you’re looking for a place where you can slow down, relax and step back in time to a quiet simple life, then Cashton is the place for you.
