Ducks, cranes, and geese are among the earliest Wisconsin spring migrants to return after winter. Drakes will sport their gaudy breeding plumage, and vocalization from Sandhill Cranes and Canada Geese announce courtship and proclaim nesting territories. A few species will stay to nest in the Kickapoo Valley, but most species will migrate further to northern nesting grounds. Hike from the visitor center to the nearby ponds along the Old Highway 131 trail in search for the various waterfowl, waders, and other wetland birds.
